OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - It is not the graduation most seniors at Ottumwa High School were hoping for. But the staff and the school board wanted to make sure

they got a chance to have their moment before they summer came and they move on to their next phase in their lives.

They came up with a drive-up graduation event. It is planned for the weekend of May 23rd and 24th in front of the school’s steps.

Here is how it will work. Seniors and their immediate family will arrive by car in alphabetical order and drive up to the front of the high school.

Everyone will stay in the vehicle, except for the senior who will walk onto the stage, get their diploma, have their picture taken and then walk off stage and go back to

their vehicle.

The district hopes to live stream this two day event for public viewing.

Students will be handed a diploma cover, but will be mailed their actual diploma

A graduation ceremony at Schafer Stadium in July or August is tentatively planned.

It will be an in-person ceremony, if social distancing guidelines have been removed and large social events can take place while meeting state and local guidelines

related to COVID-19.
