ALBIA, Iowa (KYOU) -After a close game on Friday, the Albia High School Lady Dees have taken the state softball championship.

They won 1 - 0.

The Lady Dees are the first Albia school team to ever take home a state championship.

After the victory, the team headed to the Albia square, where the community celebrated their win.

The team has been to the state competition six times. This was the four year in a row the Lady Dees have gone to state.

Two Senior players Jena Lawrence and Alex Beard were overwhelmed by the community support.

“You could hear all the fans in the crowd screaming and yelling and we all came together and we were crying and hugging, and we just made history and we completed a goal.” said Jena Lawrence.

“When we came into town on Friday night and we drove up on the square, there were people that I’ve never seen before supporting us and screaming just as loud as we were and happy, genuinely happy, as we were.” said Alex Beard.

Congratulations to the team!
