OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - The Ottumwa Police Department announced this afternoon that a Mahaska County Deputy Sheriff is dead after sustaining a gunshot wound to the torso.

Just after 7 AM Tuesday morning, Ottumwa Police responded to the 700 block of Edwards Drive to reports of an individual who had been accidentally shot with a firearm. The victim was identified as 35-year-old, Brian Rainey, of Mahaska County.

Rainey was serving as a Deputy Sheriff for the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office and was off duty at the time of the incident. The initial investigation finds that Rainey’s firearm accidentally discharged and struck him in the torso area. He did not survive his injuries.
