OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - After a public hearing and two city council meetings, the city has decided to renew Bridge City Sanitation’s contract for garbage collection.

The two choices were between Bridge City Sanitation and the Urbandale-based Sparta Waste Services.

The council and public lobbed critique at both - Bridge City for 10 years of complaints among citizens, and Sparta Waste Services for being an out-of-town business.

In the end, the council voted 3-2 in favor of Bridge City Sanitation.

The contract will last until 20-31 and will cost the city just above $19 million.

However, to balance the criticism against Bridge City Sanitation, the council may decide to evaluate the company and contract every few years moving forward.
