OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) -The Ottumwa School Board voted to approve the purchase of the Market on Main building at Monday night’s school board meeting.

The board officially reaching an agreement with the Ottumwa Legacy Foundation to purchase the space at a price of $500,000.

There is a contingency in that agreement that the Legacy Foundation would give back $100,000 of that over a two-year period.

The school district plans to use the Market on Main building to develop a career and technical education program after some concerns were raised that students were leaving high school without employable skills.

Superintendent Mike McGrory believes this will be a valuable tool for students and the community.

“It’s a really exciting opportunity for the district. But, it’s exciting in a lot of different ways. The programming is obvious. The different things you can do. The connection to Indian Hills, the connection to the community. But also, we think we can really be a connection to the downtown; as well as really be a community resource with events as well as this facility,” McGrory said.

The district plans to partner with local businesses along Main Street to give apprenticeships opportunities to its students.
