FAIRFIELD, Iowa (KYOU) Another holiday even is cancelled, this time in Fairfield.

The Chamber of Commerce has announced the Holiday Lighting Ceremony in Central Park scheduled for Friday, November 27th, has been canceled for this year.

This action comes upon the Governor’s mandate to prohibit large gatherings until December 10th. The Santa House and Workshop will also be closed during this time. Children are encouraged to write a letter to Santa and drop it off in the special North Pole mailbox located on the square near the Santa House.

There will still be the magical moment when the holiday lights on the square come on every night around 6 PM from 11/27/20 until New Years Day, and holiday music will be played from approximately 8A-8PM through this time period. A sight to see… from the safety of your car, or in small numbers outside.

“2020 has challenged our community, unlike anything most of us have ever seen. As a favorite moment by so many people in our community, cancellation of this event was the most difficult decision we have made this year,” said Chamber CEO, Darien Sloat. “Because of the popularity of this event, we kept looking for ways to make this happen in a safe fashion, but ultimately the Governor’s mandate made that decision for us. We especially wanted to keep the Santa House and Workshop open, but at the end of the discussion, the Chamber’s Christmas Committee unanimously agreed that any public event during this current state of the pandemic would add unnecessary risk to our community in a time when we all need to exercise the highest level of caution yet during this crisis.”

The Chamber would like to encourage community members to Shop Local this year more than ever as local small businesses struggle to stay open. Giving Chamber Bucks as a gift is a way to ensure that money stays in our community.

Chamber Bucks can be purchased at the Chamber office in increments of $5.00, and 100% of your purchase goes to local businesses.

The Chamber charges no fee to process Chamber Bucks, unlike gift cards or credit cards. Simply present the Chamber Bucks checks to Jefferson County businesses as you would cash, or a personal check. With almost three hundred Chamber members in our county, Chamber Bucks are widely accepted in Jefferson County.
