OSKALOOSA, Iowa (KYOU) -The weather is changing and with many neighboring states already seeing snow it’s time to make sure you and your vehicle are prepared for the snow. When driving in the winter it’s important to remember the three P’s of driving: Prepare, Protect, and Prevent. Oskaloosa firefighter Adam Haroldson says having these necessities in your car is important.

Harldson says: “Jumper cables is a really important thing to have in the wintertime. Car batteries don’t really like the cold very well, so having a pair of jumper cables is really important. As well as having some non-perishable food items, a blanket.”

But there are more precautions to take than just preparing to be stranded. Making sure to slow down and increase distances between cars and of course know your breaks and never stomp on them.

He also added: “It’s really important to just slow down. Winter weather or summer weather or dry conditions or anything. Just slow down and take your time. Be vigilant, don’t drive distracted. Always wear your seatbelt.”

Harldson also wants to remind drivers to take it slow and be cautious of other drivers on the road.
