OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) -Students, faculty, and members of the Greater Ottumwa Partners in Progress gathered Thursday morning at Wilson Elementary School to award Principal Jeff Hendred with the Gene Schultz Community Service award for his outstanding commitment to the community. He was at a loss for words

“Feels like a shock, what can I say? Other people do more than I do. It’s not about me, I’m speechless.”

Hendred says he loves his students and faculty and credits them for this achievement.

“I think about the analogy of football. Everybody celebrates the quarterback, everybody celebrates the person that made the touchdown but they don’t realize it’s the people on the line, it’s the people that work together to make things happen. It’s the people here that make whatever we do be what it is.”

He’s arranged assemblies to bring different cultures together in the community to celebrate black history month, Hispanic festivals, Marshallese freedom fest, and more. When asked what is his motivation he said the love of the community.

“The love of the community, the love of my people. It’s not about me it’s all about you then we focus on what can we do to make an event special for you. That’s my motivation.”

Hendred says he thankful to the community for recognizing him and giving up the best of themselves to make Ottumwa the best that it can be.
