OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) -Businesses and schools have been closed for two days now following yesterday’s snowstorm. Blood banks are of those affected and are counting on donations to save lives.

The storm across Southeastern Iowa and Western Illinois has led to an estimated 250 donations lost due to canceled blood drives and donors’ inability to travel.

Public relations manager Kirby Winn for the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center is seeking additional donors to help local blood supplies remain strong.

“When the weather gets bad and we start to see snow flying in the forecast and it’s pretty serious, we wind up canceling blood drives. And, even though our donation centers might remain open like the center there in Ottumwa. We have donors who can’t get there for their appointments that they had scheduled and had planned on,” Winn shared with KYOU

He also says blood donation centers are abiding by CDC guidelines and making it as safe as possible to donate.
