Linda Barnes and her mother Eileen Ward haven’t sat down at a piano together in over a year. Now, with the Covid-19 vaccine bringing new hope to families -- they are finally able to sit down in person and play again.

“Mom plays the piano by ear, and she’s fabulous at it. None of us could play as near as good as she does. But, she taught us things like chopsticks or little duets that we could play as children to love the piano as much as she does,” Barnes told KYOU during their first in-person visit.

Eileen and her husband Ken have been living at Homestead of Oskaloosa for a little over a year, with little contact with their daughter. But, today’s first visit brought on an emotional reunion and of course music.

“I think the meaningful interactions come when you’re not scheduled or trying to go through a checklist. So, just to be able to have uninterrupted time and we’re just at leisure and almost back to normal is really important and really special. I’m just so excited to get to spend the afternoon with them,” Barnes said.

Now, with 50 years of music under their belts. This family can now share something that holds them all together -- music.
