OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - The YMCA sports department is collaborating with Empowered, a program offered for the youth with any type of cognitive, physical, or emotional disability to be active.

Justice Finch shows us what daily activities entailed.

“They do an obstacle course as you can see here.”

He says that this opportunity not only allows the youth to interact with other people but teaches the coordinators how to interact with the youth.

“Occupational therapy collaborates with them so that we can have a better understanding.”

Nicole Copple who is the athletic coordinator wants the kids to know they are supported.

“We’re here to help them, we’re here to show that we want to support them in everything they do, we want them to be confident in themselves and more engaged with other things.”

Empowered coordinator Kassie Padget thinks that this collaboration is important in helping to shape the children’s future.

“I want to make sure that kids with disabilities are able to fulfill hopes and dreams they have down the road and I think this is a good start and it is important for them to work with people who want to be apart of that.”
