OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - There has been an increase in the theft of catalytic converters in Jefferson County Iowa. The Sherrif’s department provided tips on how to keep your vehicle safe. Park in well lit areas and close to building entrances. If you have a garage at your house, park your car inside and keep the door shut.

Weld your converter to your car frame. That makes it harder to steal. Consider engraving your vehicle identification number on the converter to help car dealers help to identify the right owner.

Add an aftermarket catalytic converter antitheft device and lastly, calibrate your car’s alarm.
