Illinois man takes police on pursuit through several southern Iowa counties

OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) -On Wednesday, March 31st at approximately 1:17 P.M., the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office was advised that the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office had a vehicle attempting to elude them traveling northbound on Hwy 16.

It was also relayed that they were just about to enter Wapello County and the City of Eldon. Once entering Wapello County Deputies provided assistance.

The driver of the fleeing vehicle, 28-year-old John Broeksmit from Dwight, Illinois, eluded law enforcement for several counties reaching speeds of 110 mph.

During the course of the pursuit, spike strips were deployed on several occasions.

Around 2:10 P.M., Broeksmit stopped the vehicle near the Monroe, Iowa exit on Hwy 163. He exited the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident.

Wapello County Deputies have filed criminal complaints for Eluding and Interference with Official Act.

Several Law Enforcement agencies assisted in the incident.
