1 out of 5 Iowans fully vaccinated against COVID-19
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - Just over 20% of Iowa’s total population has completed their vaccination course for the novel coronavirus, according to new state data on Saturday.
As of 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, the Iowa Department of Public Health said that a total of 1,592,051 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered in Iowa so far, an increase of 40,758 since the same time on Friday. 634,506 people have completed their vaccination course, either through the two-shot vaccines or the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine, an increase of 18,441.
20.1% of Iowa’s population is fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Experts have not precisely defined what percentage of the population needs to have immunity to reach herd immunity, where enough people are vaccinated or previously infected to significantly limit or stop community spread. Many cite a figure between 70 and 85%. It is not clear, based on the data the state makes available, how many people have been fully vaccinated that had previously tested positive, making an estimate of the total percentage of people with at least some immunity to the virus difficult.
551 people who tested positive for COVID-19 were reported to the state during the last 24 hours. The total number of individuals who have tested positive in Iowa is now 352,812.
Three more people who died due to the virus were added to the state’s total since the same time on Friday, which is now 5,754 people.
200 people are in Iowa hospitals with COVID-19, a net decrease of four during the last 24-hour reporting period. 44 of those people are in intensive care units, a net increase of one. 20 of those patients require the use of a ventilator, a net increase of one. 34 people were newly-admitted to Iowa hospitals since the last report from the state, similar to daily admissions over the past several days.
The first-time tests of 2,606 individuals were reported to the state in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate for this batch of tests was 21.1%, slightly lower than the previous day’s 21.7%. A total of 1,646,436 individuals have been tested for the virus since the pandemic began.
