Ottumwa City Council approves funds for a new trail alongside Oxbow Lagoon

OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - A new trail alongside the Oxbow Lagoon will link up other hiking trails near Ottumwa Park. The City Council approved it through a COVID-19 Relief Grant today.

The trail will span across the south side of the Oxbow Lagoon, parallel to Richmond Avenue and Church Street. It will connect the trail along the north of the Lagoon into one loop. The estimated cost of the project is $851,013. COVID-19 Relief Recreational Trails Program grant will cover $637,667 of that cost, with the rest being split up between the City of Ottumwa and Wapello County.

The breakdown is:

  • Estimated Project Cost $851,013
  • Funding: Wapello County $25,530
  • Wapello County Trails $38,000
  • City of Ottumwa $20,000
  • City of Ottumwa in-kind $129,815 design, contract management and construction management
  • COVID- 19 $637,667

The resolution passed 3-0.
