OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - The Ottumwa Crossings Initiative has started its “Getting By and Getting Ahead” class this week.

The nonprofit organization seeks to unite the community and impact the future of individuals who are under-resourced.

The classes, intended for adults, will be held at The Hub Coffee Shop in downtown Ottumwa from 5 pm to 8:30 pm and will last a total of 16 weeks.

Transportation and meals will be provided.

Programming Coordinator Vern Reed says the criteria shared in the class are necessary for identifying and tackling tough situations.

“Like lack of resources, whether it’s emotional or physical, what tough situations in our community look like as it relates to having a job that pays a living wage or understanding how much of my pay should go towards my housing cost versus my food cost or other costs. The learning is amazing and it helps all of us.”
