OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) -A boil order is in effect for the south side of Ottumwa following a water main break along Church Street.

On the evening of July 31st, around 7:30 pm a large transmission main broke causing a wide area of the town on the south side of the Des Moines River to experience very low pressure.

At the same time, Ottumwa Water Works was draining the Greenwood tank for maintenance and this is why such a large area is impacted.

As a precaution, we are issuing a Boil Water Advisory. Ottumwa Water Works will be required to take two sets of 10 water samples and have an independent lab analyze them 24 hours apart, once the samples pass the boil order will be lifted.

The boil order is expected to last through Tuesday, August 3rd.
