OSKALOOSA, Iowa (KYOU) - Tuesday night the Tomato Fest event was held in Oskaloosa. Everyone got to try different types of heirloom tomatoes and learn new recipes.

Suzette Striegel, Horticulturist at Mahaska county extension says the event is important. “Tomato Fest as we call it is an opportunity for people to learn more about growing tomatoes as well as taking other varieties of tomatoes.”

At the event, anyone could find a different type of tomato they may have never heard of. “We have black cherry, Italian ice, we have opalka and federle they are a paste tomato,” says Striegel.

While at the event people could find new salsas to try and everyone could sample the different types of tomatoes.

Before the event got started there was a tour given of the local garden where the tomatoes were grown. Everyone got a lesson from growing tomatoes to canning them.

Anyone wanting to start their own tomato garden should consider getting your seeds in March and plant them in your garden.
