OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - Most people may find taxes to be stressful. Wednesday here in Iowa part of the property tax are due.

Anyone at home wondering what the best way to pay their taxes, Laurie Fountain says the best way to pay taxes is what works for you. To pay your property tax, you can pay at the office, online, or by mail.

Go to the website click on your county and type in your full name to narrow down the list to the correct statement.

When you pay you can use a personal check, cash, or a cashier’s check. If you choose to pay with a credit or debit card there will be an additional fee of $2.00.

Once you pay there may be the question crossing your mind of, “Where does my money go?” For property tax, the money goes towards the taxing authority. In Ottumwa located in Wapello County Indian Hills College and Ottumwa School District, both can benefit from the money spent on property tax.

There is one important piece of information you should know. The statements sent out in August are the only ones you will receive. “We will not mail anymore out this year,” says Fountain. If you bought a house after the statement was sent out, you will want to call the treasurer’s office and check to make sure those taxes were paid.
