NEW SHARON, Iowa (KYOU) - Victims in Louisiana from Hurricane Ida are slowly trying to build back their lives following the storm.

Among those helping the victims, is a team from New Sharon, Iowa.

This past week New Sharon Fire Captain Steven Gerard and fellow servicemen traveled to the hurricane-battered state to help with the clean-up.

When asked why he does this, Gerard said, “Everybody needs help and there is so much damage usually with these hits. There are not enough resources in their communities to do it. Everybody’s got an issue.”

Gerard was there for the clean-up when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005 and he said there is a difference between the storm damage.

For Katrina, he saw there was a lot of water damage and with Ida, he noticed there is a lot of rubble and damage due to trees and debris hitting homes.

The next two towns Gerard and his team will be heading to are Independence and Springfield, Louisiana.
