Women compete for $5,000 cash prize in a billiards tournament held in Fairfield
FAIRFIELD, Iowa (KYOU) - Some of the world’s top billiards players are competing at the Fairfield Arts and Convention Center for a grand prize of $5,000 and the champion title.
The top 48 players in the Women’s Professional Billiards Association were invited to compete out of about 140 players total.
Daryn Hamilton, who is the tournament organizer, says less than 20 players are competing.
“14 of the top 16 W.P.B.A. are here to play for this event,” says Hamilton.
To make the tournament even more interesting, Hamilton says there will be double eliminations.
“So if a player loses their match then they will go on to the one-loss side of the bracket and continue to play and they can come all the way back from losing their very first match to win the tournament,” he explains.
Current nine-ball ladies world champion, Kelly Fisher, who’s had 30 years of experience in the game, is back from the U.K. to compete and says her goal is to improve her 3rd place win from the last tournament.
“Obviously my goal would be to better that and take it all the way and get the championships hopefully, but first things first one match at a time. Anything can happen in nine-ball I’m just hoping I can do alright,” says Fisher.
The tournament will go on until the finals on Sunday. If you’re interested in attending the event you can purchase your tickets online at fairfieldacc.com or buy your tickets at the door.
