Grace Ottumwa Church enjoys helping its community
OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - A church for the community is how Pastor Chris Childs describes Grace Ottumwa. The people of Grace were originally three separate Methodist churches who decided to come together to be one congregation.
Over the past two years, the people at Grace Ottumwa have gathered at temporary locations. Now, in a matter of months, there will be a permanent location. This location has a large garden allowing the people to grow food to help with food insecurity here in Ottumwa.
Pastor Chris Childs says, “One of the things we love on this property is we have 113 acres. So, we were able to plant a pretty big garden to produce food for people in the community who might struggle with food insecurity.”
The garden has already grown sixteen hundred pounds with the goal being two hundred pounds of produce.
The food is picked and then donated to places like Blessings Soup kitchen. Sheri Lock-Smith who runs the soup kitchen says, “We appreciate the effort that it took to bring fresh produce to the kitchen. We’ve been cooking a lot of food right now and people really love it.”
Grace Ottumwa is always looking for ways they can help the community more.
