Appanoose owners bringing new mercantile concept downtown
OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - Building up the downtown area is something the owners of Appanoose are contributing towards with the new Mercantile.
Right now the inside of the store is bare, with no shelves or products to sell. Soon those walls will be filled with gourmet food and fine gifts for customers.
Dennis Willhoit the Co-Owner of Appanoose Rapids Mercantile says, visitors of the restaurant would ask for other places to visit downtown. “And so, this is is another amenity for downtown. for in the town, of course, our citizens and also our out-of-town guest for shopping downtown.”
The products that will be sold in the store can also be found in the restaurant, Appanoose Rapids. “Gourmet foods, so it reflects with the restaurant, it reflects the foodservice and the products that we use,” says Willhoit.
The Mercantile not only reflects the brand of Appanoose, but it also reflects the history of Ottumwa. When you walk inside there is a wall decorated with maps of Ottumwa dating all the way back to the late 19th century. “So, we hope that when people come into the store while they are finding all the modern products that there is a sense of history they walked into,” Willhoit stated.
He also said the town has so much character that should be celebrated moving forward to the future.
