CHELSEA, Iowa (KCRG) - The Iowa Department of Public Safety said a man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Tama County.

Officials said it happened at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday near 1001 Station Street in Chelsea.

Several law enforcement agencies responded and found 28-year-old Dewey Wilfong III walking with a handgun.

Officials said a Tama County Deputy fired one shot, hitting him in the chest. Wilfong III was taken to the hospital, where he died.

The Tama County deputy that fired the shot is now on paid administrative leave.
