Ottumwa Fire Department: Now is the best time to check your smoke detectors
OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - Turning our clocks back also means colder temperatures, where heat will be on the rise in our homes.
Fire Captain David Yeager with the Ottumwa Fire Department says now is a good time to check the batteries in your smoke detectors. He says the smoke detectors are the first line of defense of a fire and people’s safety.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, the risk of dying in a house fire is 55% lower when smoke detectors are activated. Yeager says, “Stuff can be replaced, people can’t and that is a very inexpensive way to help make sure your home is safe with working smoke alarms.”
Yeager says checking and changing the batteries is just as important as other home appliances that you use daily. Except the smoke detector can save your life. “Like your cellphone or this or that or something else that you have that’s important to the way you live, you want to make sure it works like your car.”
Changing the batteries is pretty simple, all you need to do is take it off the ceiling or wall and open the hatch where you put the batteries, according to Yeager.
Now, if you are someone who cannot climb a ladder, are handicapped, or would just like help with your smoke detector, the Ottumwa Fire Department has a program where they can assist you in checking and changing the batteries.
All you need to do is call the fire department at (641)683-0666.
