OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - When it comes to your leftovers, it is important to know how to store your food properly.

Chef Bob Newell says it is important to wrap up your food or put it in containers. You should also store it separately and do not mix any of your foods in the containers. “Keep them wrapped up, they’ll be good for four to five days in the refrigerator.”

Newell says you can also freeze your leftovers like sweet potatoes or even your turkey. There is also a way to utilize your leftovers for other meals. “So, you can take your sweet potatoes freeze them you can make sweet potato pie out of them.”

When it comes to how long your food can be left out on the table before you store it away, Newell says the time is limited; especially for items like pumpkin pie that should be kept cold. He says you want to limit it to four hours or less, preferably two.

Newell says these steps are important to take to keep yourself safe and your family. He also says to work from a safety standpoint.
