OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - Demolition is starting on the former Wesley United Methodist Church. The lot will be eventually be sold to the Ottumwa School District for a parking lot expansion.

Construction crews began work Tuesday night, and have already demolished much of the western section of the church.

The Ottumwa School Superintendent tells KYOU he’s been told the lot will be cleared by December 16th.

The demolition has drawn some criticism from the Ottumwa Historic Preservation Committee, who lamented the decision to raze the building.
