New traditions starting in Ottumwa this Christmas
OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - Holidays are about traditions. Traditions with family and friends to celebrate the holidays together.
Andy Wartenberg of Meet Ottumwa says they do holiday promotions each year, but this year they wanted to do something different to attract families to the area.
The new tradition is a weekend getaway in Ottumwa. Wartenberg says the obvious reason is for people to come and shop locally. “And you know, every dollar they spend in our hotels here, that’s also a couple of dollars they are going to spend at restaurants and shops, especially this time of year.”
Also, while boosting the local economy, the other goal is for guests to realize Ottumwa can be a special place to celebrate Christmas. Wartenberg says here in Ottumwa we have a special way of celebrating the holidays and sharing it is important. “You know how we celebrate holiday nights in lights things like that, we want these folks to go home and not only say okay we’re going to put this on our holiday calendar every year were going to Ottumwa, we’re going to encourage them to post this.”
According to Wartenberg, this is a weekend getaway for anyone, and no member of the family will be left out. “We are a family-oriented town, so we encourage families. We have things to do for adults, for foodies, and we have a lot of things to do for the kids.”
