Former Promise City, Iowa city clerk accused of taking city funds for personal use

WAYNE COUNTY, Iowa (KYOU) -The former city clerk of Promise City, Iowa is under investigation. The Iowa State Auditor’s office was asked to look into the town’s financials.
An investigation found more than $56,000 of improper payments.
The state report says over $25,000 of unauthorized payments to Debra Eccleston, the former city clerk, and another employee.
It also found another $25,000 of town funds were used for personal purchases by Eccleston and to pay her electric bill.
Eccleston has been charged in Wayne County with theft and forgery.
She is due in court on December 21.
