HOLLYWOOD, S.C. (WCSC/Gray News) – A South Carolina family and community are mourning the loss of a young man who was killed in a house fire and had dreams of playing football for the NFL.

Jaiden Odom was a 15-year-old Lowcountry football player who played at Baptist Hill High School in Hollywood. After officials shared that Odom was trapped and had died in the fire, the community followed with an outpouring of support.

“If I could say anything to him right now, the first thing I would say is that I truly miss you,” Kelly Odom, Jaiden’s mother, said.

Odom’s parents described him as a “gentle giant” who was kind, generous, thoughtful, hardworking and passionate. They shared stories of him as a protector of his family and a leader in school on and off the field.

“It just does me justice to know that we did a great job raising him,” Kelly said. “We did a great job. I always tried to instill in him that if you be a good person, good things will come back to you. And this just shows the type of person he was. All the love and support is a reflection of the type of person that he was. It’s overwhelming, but it’s amazing.”

Off the field, his strength wasn’t in his blocks; it was in his heart. His parents describe him as a fiercely loyal brother who showed up for his siblings and loved with everything he had.

“Everybody that he touched, he did not just touch them; he grabbed a hold of them and held them and said, ‘I got you,’” David Grant, Odom’s father, said.

Diani Grant is Odom’s big sister and says he was always there for her and almost felt like a second mother to him.

Valencia Snipe-Grant is the mother of Jaiden’s older siblings, and she describes him as a loving, remarkable young man who was always willing to give a helping hand.

“Sometimes I needed him to do things for me, and he did so with no problem,” she says. “The family’s gentle giant will be truly missed, and this family is truly hurting but glad he made such an impact during his time here. The outpouring of love from everywhere proves it.”

As condolences pour in from across the Lowcountry, his parents say the overwhelming support is proof that Odom’s light was simply too bright to ever be put out.

“50% of it’s crying because I’m hurt; I lost my baby, and then it’s the other 50% of that overwhelming feeling and can’t believe how many people he’s impacted,” Kelly said.

Community coming together to honor and remember Jaiden Odom

To the Baptist Hill High School Bobcats, Odom was number 57 and a powerhouse offensive lineman, but to his parents, he was a boy who fell in love with the game the second a football touched his hands. They described his passion for football in the way he was always the first to arrive at camps and the last to leave the turf.

“He’s going to travel with that football. If there’s a yard, he’s traveling with that football,” Kelly said. “Seriously, that’s how much we knew that, okay, football is what it’s going to be.”

Odom had dreams of playing in the NFL for the Detroit Lions, and his family says he was on his way to making it a reality. One of the few items to survive the fire is the football Odom had with him ever since he was a little boy.

Baptist Hill High School shared a statement in response to his death and said their hearts are heavy as the Baptist Hill family mourns the loss of one of their own.

“Jaiden will forever be a part of Baptist Hill, and his memory will live on in the halls, on the field, and in the hearts of his classmates, teammates, teachers, coaches, and the entire Bobcat community,” they said in a statement on Facebook. “Our hearts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with Jaiden’s family and loved ones during this unimaginable time. May they feel the love and support of the entire Baptist Hill community surrounding them.”

Town of Hollywood Mayor Chardale Murray also shared her condolences following his passing and says it has left her upset on several levels.

“As the Mayor of the Town of Hollywood, this has left our very close-knit town in shock as a young and tender link in our chain has been broken,” she says. “As an alumnus of Baptist Hill High School, where Jaiden served as an offensive lineman for the Mighty Bobcats. It did my heart good to hear that they are playing this game and season in his honor.”

Several schools across the Lowcountry have also shared their condolences on social media.

“Our hearts are heavy as we stand alongside the Baptist Hill High School family following the heartbreaking loss of a student,” R.B. Stall High School said in a Facebook statement. “During this difficult time, we are sending our deepest condolences, love, and support to the student’s family, friends, classmates, teachers, and the entire Baptist Hill community.”

His parents say their goal is to never let the community forget his name and who he was. Thinking ahead, they have ideas of possibly creating a scholarship, clinic, and remembrance events in his name and honor.

They believe Jaiden is looking down at them, smiling, knowing they are celebrating the son they raised.
